ARLINGTON, VA - Chippin, a leading alternative protein pet nutrition company, announced on Wednesday the launch of its premium Dehydrated Cricket Daily Food for dogs. The recipe comes as a response to the success of the company’s cricket-based dog treats and the urgency to reduce meat consumption globally to protect the planet and its resources. If they were their own country, USA pets would be the fifth largest meat consumers across the globe.

According to research out of the University of California, Los Angeles, pets consuming meat-based diets in the United States create 64 million tons of CO2e per year. They are responsible for approximately 25%-30% of the environmental impact that comes from consuming meat in the United States.

The demand for alternative protein sources is growing when evaluated against their impact on the environment compared to traditional animal proteins. Cricket is a healthy alternative that emits zero methane, and uses significantly less water and land when compared to livestock farming.

“As chicken and beef are the top allergens for pets, pet parents are desperate to find an alternative protein solution. On the back of our wildly successful cricket based treats, it was a natural next step to craft a one-of-a-kind recipe that provides all the nutritional benefits of traditional proteins, without the negative health and environmental benefits.”

Chippin utilizes human-grade cricket protein sourced from Entomo Farms, a family farm in Canada, to create their delicious recipe. Working with board certified veterinarians and nutritionists, the food includes a curated selection of all natural ingredients, vitamins, and minerals, to create a meal that is complete and balanced. It contains all 10 essential amino acids that dogs need to thrive, as well as healthy omega-3s and prebiotic fiber. The dehydrated recipe serves a dual purpose: it’s a fresh and convenient option for pet parents to serve their dogs, while also minimizing further emissions by not having to ship additional water weight to its customers.

“We know that animal agriculture is a top cause of deforestation, depletes our limited water resources, and is a massive emitter of greenhouse gasses. Not to mention the inhumane practices we see with factory farming. Reducing our meat consumption is one of the best things we can do for our planet.”

Chippin is leading the way to develop planet-friendly options for pet parents who are conscious of their environmental footprint. According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, animal agriculture accounts for nearly 37% of methane emissions worldwide (with new research suggesting animal agriculture may account for 50-80% of all greenhouse gas emissions when both direct and indirect sources are accounted for). It also contributes widely to deforestation and destruction of the Amazon Rainforest, as well as the aquatic “dead zones'' created by farm runoff. By choosing alternative proteins like cricket, pet parents can feel confident that they are not causing inadvertent harm to the planet. When purchasing the 10 pound bag of Chippin’s Dehydrated Cricket Daily Food, pet parents save up to 3,700 gallons of water per bag and prevent up to 33 pounds of CO2 from being emitted into the atmosphere. Combined with the palatability of the recipe, this new food deserves two paws up.

The launch comes one month before COP27 where food production and its impact on the environment will be discussed formally for the first time. It’s widely known that time is of the essence when it comes to addressing animal agriculture’s impact on the planet. Both pets and their humans can make a difference by choosing cricket protein and other alternative proteins that deliver healthy nutrients while minimizing harm to the environment.

Save the Earth. It’s the only Planet with Dogs.
