Frequently Asked Questions
We are a small women-owned business that's on a mission to nourish our dogs with high quality foods that help "chip in" to reduce the carbon pawprint. Chippin is made with a curated selection of all natural ingredients including planet-friendly proteins like cricket, spirulina and silver carp. These are science-backed sources of digestible protein that use 80%+ fewer resources.
How are Chippin treats and food made?
We craft each recipe with guidance from board certified veterinarians, PhDs and pet parents like you to create high quality, delicious tasting foods! Then we oven bake each recipe in kitchens that have the highest Safe Quality Foods (SQF) certification and standards for quality and safety.
Where do you source your ingredients?
Chippin is made in the USA, and we partner with small to medium sized local farms to directly source our human grade cricket, spirulina and silver carp proteins. Our farmers are partners we know and trust! We say “No!” to commodity meats from unknown sources.
My dog has allergies. Will Chippin work for my dog?
For dogs, the most common allergens and issues for dogs with sensitive tummies are from the protein in beef, chicken, lamb and dairy. Chippin treats and food are powered by novel protein sources like crickets, spirulina and silver carp. This can serve as a hypoallergenic protein that we have seen work well for thousands of dogs! We also ran a study that showed Chippin treats supports gut health. Gut microbiota is an important factor in immune system health and even allergic responses!
Are Chippin products developed with veterinarians?
Yes! All Chippin products are developed and overseen by our board certified veterinary nutritionist, Dr. Beth Hamper DVM, PhD, DACVN (Diplomate to the American College of Veterinary Nutrition)!
How does Chippin ensure quality and safety?
At Chippin, our priority is to produce high quality, low carbon pawprint foods for your four-legged family members. We partner with veterinarians and PhDs to craft every Chippin recipe. We ensure that our manufacturing partners operate with best in class operating and safety standards. Chippin treats are science backed! We partner with scientists and universities to conduct nutritional analyses. Chippin supports a healthy gut microbiome. The protein sources used are also highly digestible (more digestible than chicken).
Should I consult my veteterinarian before feeding Chippin?
We welcome you to share Chippin with your veterinarian! We work with board certified veterinary nutritionists, PhDs and pet parents to create all natural, complete and balanced products that are great for dogs. Our treats are designed for supplemental feeding, and the foods we create are developed to meet AAFCO guidelines for adult maintenance. We also are here to answer any questions you may have at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Is Chippin vegan or vegetarian?
Our spirulina dog treat is a vegan (and vegetarian) dog treat that can be used as a training treat, meal topper or snack. All Chippin products contain NO proteins or byproducts from mammals. The crickets and silver carp fish we source are humanely harvested from our small to medium-sized farmer and fishery partners. Our crickets are harvested at the end of their natural life cycle and live in conditions that they would naturally select. Our silver carp is wild-caught, and by fishing for this overpopulated fish we help restore biodiversity, improve water quality, and protect the Great Lakes.
Can puppies eat Chippin?
Chippin dog treats are for all dog breeds of all ages and sizes. For small dogs, treats are easily breakable into four pieces for smaller bites and reduced calories that are perfect dog training treats too. Our daily food recipe is formulated to meet the nutritional needs of dogs that are one year or older. It's made to meet the AAFCO nutritional requirements for Adult Maintenance diets.
Can I feed Chippin to my cat?
We don't make cat food or treats, yet! We've heard, though, that some cats have gotten their paws into the canine cookie jar and enjoyed it....Interested in Chippin for cats? Let us know here. We are interested in hearing your feedback and may be cooking up something for your cat soon!
Why is cricket protein good for my dog? Do dogs like cricket protein?
Dogs love cricket protein and Chippin cricket dog treats! Crickets are good for dogs in providing a source of complete and highly digestible protein that has all 10 essential amino acids. For dogs with allergies or sensitive tummies, crickets are a natural source of prebiotic fiber, protein variety, and support for gut health. Check out our Antioxidant, Superfood, and Cricket Jerky dog treats powered by omega 3-rich and antibiotic-free crickets. We then pair the cricket protein with healthy all-natural ingredients that dogs love like blueberries, pumpkin, peanut butter, and carrots.
How does cricket protein reduce the carbon pawprint?
It only takes 1 gallon of water to produce 1 pound of cricket protein, but 2,000 gallons of water to produce 1 pound of beef protein. More than 80% of our water usage goes to agriculture. Livestock management is a leading cause of deforestation. Livestock and manure management are some of the leading causes of methane emissions. Crickets emit no methane emissions and use a tiny fraction of the water and land used within the animal agriculture industry.
Why is spirulina good for my dog? Do dogs like spirulina?
Spirulina is a highly digestible blue-green algae and vegan protein that is more than 55% protein. Dogs love our Spirulina Dailies that are packed with all natural spirulina, kale, carrots, oats, and flaxseed. For dogs with allergies or sensitive tummies, spirulina is a natural source of protein variety. Our Spirulina Dailies are a science-backed dog treat that supports gut health.
How does spirulina reduce the carbon pawprint?
Ecologically grown, our spirulina is more than 55% protein and grown in a closed-loop water and nutrient recycling system. Did you know that growing spirulina actually requires the use of CO2? While most protein development emits CO2, spirulina actually absorbs it!
Why is silver carp fish good for my dog? Do dogs like silver carp?
Dogs love silver carp! Silver carp fish is good for dogs in providing a source of complete and highly digestible protein that has all ten essential amino acids. For dogs with allergies or sensitive tummies, silver carp is a natural alternative protein and omega 3-rich delicious food. While other fish, like tuna, accumulate toxins, silver carp is a clean fish that has no detectable heavy metals like mercury. We pair our 100% fresh silver carp (no meat meals!) with healthy all-natural ingredients like oats, pumpkin, flaxseed, cranberries, spinach, yeast (great for B vitamins) and chicory root (great fiber!).
Does the silver carp smell fishy?
It does not have a fishy smell. Our silver carp products have a neutral aroma. In fact, when surveyed, 100% of pet parents described the products as smelling "Good" and "Much better than regular pet food." That's because silver carp is a naturally light fish and we source it fresh caught directly from a local fishery.
How does silver carp reduce the carbon pawprint?
Omega 3-rich silver carp is an overpopulated fish in the USA. Status quo fishing operations cause high levels of bycatch that harm marine wildlife. Plus, fishing gear is the leading cause of ocean plastic pollution. Combined with widespread overfishing of commonly used fishes (like salmon and whitefish from Atlantic cod), we had to find a better way. By fishing for silver carp, we help restore wildlife biodiversity and protect the Great Lakes--a water source for more than 48 million people! We actually NEED to fish for silver carp! The reason we don't see more of it around? Very simply that people don't know about it and haven't demanded it (typical supply & demand). It's incredibly nutritious and a mild, not-too-fishy fish.
How do you know these are good for my dog?
For each of our core proteins (crickets, spirulina and silver carp), we work directly with top quality, small to medium sized farms and fisheries. This enables us to lab test each batch of ingredients and create a traceable, transparent supply chain. The University of Illinois, Department of Animal Sciences, also conducted a study of all Chippin proteins in comparison to "status quo" proteins like chicken. The University found that all of our proteins have the same or better results for amino acid content (the building blocks of protein) and are more digestible for our four-legged family members. Plus, we partnered with Animal Biome to conduct a study on the gut health effects of Chippin dog treats and observed that Chippin does support a healthy gut microbiome.
How do you determine my dogʼs portions?
We follow the recommendation of Board Certified veterinarians for daily calorie intake needed based on your dog's weight and whether she or he is spayed/neutered. Based on your dog's breed and activity levels, you may need to adjust feeding amounts! We are happy to help make adjustments to delivery timing or quantity. You can email email@example.com or call us at 707-722-0339.
What is the shelf life?
Each eco friendly Chippin package has a "best by" date printed on the bag! The product expires at this date, and you will always have at least 6 months shelf life upon delivery. We bake everything in small batches to keep food fresh.
How do I prepare the Dehydrated Daily Food?
The dehydrated recipe is both fresh and convenient! Following our transitioning and feeding guidelines, mix the dry food with warm water, stir and wait three minutes, then serve the planet-friendly food to your pup!
How do I store the Dehydrated Daily Food?
The dry food should be kept in the original sealed bag or an air tight container at room temperature. You may store pre-mixed food (dehydrated + water) in the fridge for 2-3 days for added convenience.
I can see bits of ingredients from the Daily Food in my dog's stool. Is that normal?
Yes! This is normal. This high-moisture recipe contains whole foods and ingredients. It's normal to see small pieces of carrots and kale as the nutrients and antioxidants from the food are still be absorbed throughout the digestion process. If your dog was previously on a dry kibble diet, it's normal for their stool to look different.
My dog has a larger volume of stool on the Dehydrated Daily Food. Is this normal?
Yes! It's normal for your dog to have a more voluminous stool as the recipe is high in both moisture and fiber, especially compared to a previous dry kibble diet. Follow the feeding guidelines on the product page to ensure your dog is receiving the correct amount of food daily.
Low Carbon Pawprint
What is the carbon pawprint?
If considered their own country, the 180 million pets in the USA would rank 5th in global meat consumption! The carbon pawprint is the amount of water, land, and greenhouse gas emissions involved in the production of pet products and its social cost. Protein is the most resource intensive part of the "dog food chain," but it is also a critical macronutrient in your dog's diet. That's why we used high-quality proteins in our products that are great for your dog and good for the planet!
How are Chippin proteins sustainable?
Chippin is powered by proteins that use 80%+ less resources! This includes the land and water used as well as the greenhouse gasses emitted.
Is the packaging sustainable? Is it recyclable?
Yes, our "earth saving" eco friendly packaging is made from 29% post-consumer recycled (PCR) materials! This packaging decreases the amount of plastic pollution and microplastics that end up in our landfills, waterways, and drinking water. If you haven't seen our packaging already, if you look closely you can see little bumps that are not in "virgin" plastic packaging. Those bumps are little pieces of sterilized and repurposed milk cartons and yogurt cups. Also, the packaging may crinkle/wrinkle more than standard food pouches; that's a good thing! It is not recyclable. We know that less than 9% of plastic is actually recycled and oftentimes recyclable materials will still go to landfill because there is no market for them. So we chose to ensure we could support the reuse of other materials that would otherwise create waste with our PCR food safe packaging.
Is Chippin certified Plastic Neutral?
Chippin is certified Plastic Neutral through our partnership with rePurpose Global! We support rePurpose Global to remove as much nature-bound plastic waste as our packaging creates!
Does Chippin have carbon neutral shipping?
Yes! Chippin has carbon neutral shipping on all orders purchased through our website!
What is carbon neutral shipping?
Every purchase made through the Chippin website has carbon neutral shipping! We partnered with Pachama to offset the climate impact of your shipment! Pachama offsets your order's carbon footprint by funding high-impact forest conservation and restoration projects worldwide.
