Meet Sweet Potatoes - the Antioxidant & Fiber Rich Food for your Dog
By Team Chippin
When you think of dog food, you may not immediately think of sweet potatoes. This tasty veggie is often overlooked, yet it is jam packed with nutrients for your furiend. Here is the TLDR on sweet potatoes and how they can fit into your doggo’s diet.
Wait a minute, are sweet potatoes good for my dog to eat?
Yes! Sweet potatoes have many benefits for your dog.
This 5,000 year-old food is rich in beta-carotene, an antioxidant that is thought to reduce risk of certain types of cancer and provide protection against heart-disease. It is also rich in potassium, manganese, and magnesium, all of which are essential for a healthy functioning of your dog’s nerves and muscles. Lastly, as they are high in dietary fiber and low in fat, sweet potatoes support a healthy digestive system.
Okay, I am sold on the benefits of sweet potatoes, but I still don’t know how to incorporate them into my dog’s diet
Before incorporating sweet potatoes into your pup’s diet, it is always a good idea to add a small amount of it into their regular food and measure their reaction.
If your pup gets hooked on sweet potatoes, they can become a regular part of their diet! You can peel the skin of the sweet potatoes and boil them to make sure your pup can easily digest them.
It is important to remember that, like everything else, sweet potatoes need to be consumed in moderation and should not make up more than 10% of your dog’s caloric diet. Since they are higher in carbohydrates, they are not ideal for dogs with diabetes. It may be helpful to check in with your veterinarian if your dog has medical conditions.
Of course, our veterinary approved Cricket Jerky and Silver Carp Jerky treats take the guesswork out of the equation. These treats are built with a base of sweet potatoes and other yummy and nutritious ingredients. They make for high-value training treats that are sure to make your dog drool!
